Chief William H. King "Buddy" My initiation into the fire service began when I joined the Oxon Hill Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter in December 1966. In July 1970, I transferred to the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department. I have held every position in this department from Fire Fighter to Fire Chief. As of January 1, 2005, I was elected to serve as Fire Chief once again. I currently hold active life membership in this department. As an active member of the Prince Georges' County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association I have served as First Vice President, Second Vice President, and Fire Commissioner and on the Board of Directors. I am currently serving as President for Prince George's County Volunteer Fire And Rescue Association. In September 1996, I was nominated and selected to the Prince Georges' County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association Hall of Fame. This was truly an honor for my family and me. My federal fire service career began in August 1973, when I was hired as a fire fighter for the Naval Communications Unit Fire Department in Cheltenham, Maryland. In March 1978, I was selected and promoted as a Fire Captain at the David W. Taylor Naval Ship and Research Center in Carderock Maryland. After serving in this position for one year, I was promoted and held the position of Fire Chief from October 1980 to August 1986. At the time, making me the youngest Fire Chief at the Department of the Navy. At the end of that year, the Naval District Washington Consolidated Fire Department selected me to be the Assistant Fire Chief of the Fire Prevention Division in Washington, D.C. September 1989 brought another career move as I was selected and promoted to the position of Deputy Fire Chief of Operations for the Consolidated Fire Departments at Dahlgren, Va. and White Oak, Maryland. In November 1989, I was promoted as Fire Chief for both fire departments. I held this position until September 1991 when both Commanding Officers' from Dahlgren and White Oak agreed that it would be beneficial if the fire departments were separated. In September 1991, I was offered the position as Fire Chief at the White Oak Fire Department and served until the fire department closed under BRAC in August 1997. My career path led to my accepting the Fire Chiefs position at the Marine Corps Logistics Base Fire and Emergency Services Division in Albany, Georgia. I held that position from June 1998 until December 2000. In January 2001 I accepted the position n as Assistant Fire Chief for the Naval District Washington Fire and Emergency Services Fire Prevention Division. I retired in January 2008 after 331/2 years of dedicated federal fire service. My entire family is also involved in the fire service.
